How effective is the combination of your product and ancillary texts?
How effective is the combination of my main product and ancillary texts?
Film Distributor
A film distributor is is the way in which the film gets marketed and presented to the public, which is either an individual or a company who is in charge of the distribution of the film. Whether this film is being released in cinemas nation wide or internationally or to DVD release, it is their job to do this. To create a higher reach for the film, distributors will also look at campaigning their new film through different advertising ways. Such as promotion through social media.
There are several ways to advertise films, however the most influential is a trailer. This is the quickest and easiest way to get people to see your film, and can be posted online or on television, as well as both. Posters and billboards are great, however trailers are the most ideal way to advertise your film. By having your trailer as an advert on the television is the best way for it to be seen by a large mass of people, as there are millions of viewers watching television every moment of the day. Distributors will also be helping with magazines, by having your film featured in a magazine is a good way to connect with your target audience and will enable interviews with the actors and director to find out more about the newly released film.
Marketing
Depending on the genre of the film will depend on the audience, therefor is a massive influence on how the marketing will work. With mainstream block buster movies, marketing will be used across social media, billboards, bus stops and everywhere as it has to appeal to a wide audience and go across all parts of media platforms to campaign. Depending on the age of the audience also influences marketing. If your film is based for younger people, it would make more sense to spend more time and money investing in advertising online, than for an older generation who are not half as likely to be online/spend as much time online as the younger generation and adverts in the newspaper and at bus stops would be better for an older audience.
Audience Research
It is vital to conduct audience research before marketing. By doing a lot of audience research you will be able to find out not only your target audience but your secondary audience as well, their age group, hobbies and style of film which they prefer and what they do in their spare time. This will help you to conduct how you are going to promote your film. Film promoters take a lot of time into researching carefully, so they do not make the mistake of promoting online for an older generation, or advertising a children's film in a newspaper instead of on television, which they are more likely to be watching.
Example
Inception (2010) released it's first teaser trailer which then followed by the producers releasing a game on the web called 'Mind Crime' which allows the audience to play a game by cracking codes which eventually reveals a poster followed by another trailer from the producer. This fits with the film as it's high tech and futuristic and therefor the game allows fans to get a sense of what the film is going to be about. With the next level of the game sharing a hidden trailer, and eventually more surreal marketing tactics were unleashed.
